Welcome to the Department of English! Please review the following onboarding checklist designed to help you prepare for your first semester. 

Before Your First Day

First Day on Campus

  • Get your UMD ID card
  • Map out your semester with our Campus Maps
  • Visit Tawes Hall and pick up your office number, mailbox information, keys, printing/photocopying information from Helen McClung, Rm 1220 (hmcclung@umd.edu) for PWP/ENGL39X, or Scott Eklund, Rm 1116 for AWP/ENGL101 
  • Connect to eduroam on your phone and on your laptop

Preparing for Class

  • Log on to ELMS/Canvas and complete your ELMS training
    • Access the AWP ELMS site or the PWP ELMS site. If you do not have access, please contact Scott Eklund and Helen McClung respectively.
  • Review the Academic Calendar for important deadlines and University holidays
  • Reconfirm your classrooms locations by visiting https://testudo.umd.edu/.
    • If you’re new to the University of Maryland, you may wish to schedule an orientation to classroom technology with the College of Arts and Humanities by emailing arhuiteqip@umd.edu.
  • Take a trip to the library to check out the various research resources the library offers: University Libraries / Librarians by Subject / Research & Learning
  • Learn how to use UMEG, the UMD grade reporting tool.
  • Review the Student Support section in the FAQs section
