Graduate Student Assistance Fund
Purpose of Funds
This fund has been established to assist graduate students in the English department who are experiencing financial need due to an unforeseen emergency. The college and department will require documentation confirming the nature of the emergency (i.e. medical, housing, transportation issues) and the associated costs. Applications are considered on a case-by-case basis.
Funding Limit
Graduate students in the English department may apply for up to $1,500 in emergency funding through the department, and the department will apply for up to $1,500 in matching funds through the College, for a total of up to $3,000. Funds are limited and are not guaranteed. These funds are not loans, and the student is not expected to repay the funds.
Restrictions
- You must be currently enrolled in a graduate program in the English department.
- You may only apply for emergency assistance funds once during your time as a graduate student in the English department.
- These funds cannot be used toward tuition or university fee expenses (this includes parking tickets, library fines, etc.), or to buy personal electronic devices.
- These funds will be applied to and paid out through your student account at UMD. If you have an outstanding student account balance, these funds will first go toward eliminating that balance.
Request Form
Requests are accepted on a rolling basis until funds are exhausted for that fiscal year (July 1 - June 30). After submission, your request will be reviewed by the English department within one business day, and we'll communicate next steps to you.
