Travel Funding for Graduate Students

Home Graduate Students Travel Funding for Graduate Students

Annual Funding

Ph.D. Students

For Ph.D. students, the department offers funding of up to $400 per academic year for five years. Unused funds roll over into subsequent academic years, for a maximum of $2,000. In addition to these funds, the department will provide up to $1,600 in matching funds for external travel awards, such as the ARHU Travel Award, the Graduate School’s Goldhaber Travel Award, the International Conference Student Support Award (ICSSA), and other individual conference awards.

M.A. and MFA Students

For MA and MFA students, the department offers funding of up to $400 to be used during the course of study. In addition to these funds, the department will provide up to $400 in matching funds for external travel awards, such as the ARHU Travel Award, the Graduate School’s Goldhaber Travel Award, the International Conference Student Support Award (ICSSA), and other individual conference awards.

Purpose

These funds are for graduate students presenting their research at academic and professional conferences. In order to receive department travel funds, students must be delivering a presentation/poster at a regional, national, or international conference, including no more than one graduate student conference. Graduate students may petition the Director of Graduate Studies to use travel funds for professional development opportunities that fall outside these parameters, including but not limited to job interview travel and necessary research expenses (for example, image permissions, transcription, language study).

Request/Process Travel

Travel is processed through the UMD Concur travel system. Find more information on the business office section of our website.
