Welcome to the Department of English! Please review both the following onboarding guide as well as the shortened downloadable checklist to prepare for your first semester.
Establish Your Appointment
- Sign and submit your contract (sent to you from the Business Office)
- Submit your payroll and benefits forms
- Email Sarah Woldekidan (smwold11@umd.edu) to arrange your home move. Allow at least five weeks in advance of your move date to complete the process for quoting and issuing a moving contract.
Before Your First Day (after you’re notified that you’re on payroll)
- Create your Directory ID/UMD email and password
- Upload your COVID-19 vaccination information
- Select your parking plan, or choose other transportation options including Shuttle-UM and the Metro
- Review the English department’s policies and procedures
- Attend two University orientations: 1) new employee and 2) new faculty
Prepare to Teach
- Reconfirm your classrooms’ locations on Testudo. If needed, schedule an orientation to classroom technology with the College of Arts and Humanities by emailing arhuiteqip@umd.edu.
- Log on to ELMS/Canvas and complete your ELMS training
- Request sample syllabi for your courses from the Main English Office (englmeo@umd.edu)
- Review the Academic Calendar for important deadlines and University holidays
- Take a trip to the library to check out the various research resources the library offers: University Libraries, Librarians by Subject, and Research & Learning
- Learn how to use UMEG, the UMD grade and class roster tool
- Review the Student Support and Mandatory Reporting section of our intranet
Your First Day
- Pick up your office keys and receive an administrative orientation from John Yao, 2119 Tawes, johnyao@umd.edu
- Pick up your office computer from Shawn Saremi, 2107 Tawes, saremi@umd.edu
- Get your UMD ID card, first floor of the Mitchell Building
- Connect to eduroam Wi-Fi on your phone and laptop
- Map out your semester
- Complete the three University-wide required trainings: 1) TerrapinSTRONG, 2) Civil Rights Compliance Training, and 3) Defend Your Shell
